Background: The CUJO app helps people manage and protect their home Wi-Fi network. It’s built around two main ideas: showing users what devices are connected and alerting them to any possible security threats. To improve the app’s layout, we asked users what they most wanted to know about their home networks.

Challenge:

Users had some key questions:

  • Are there any security risks to my network?

  • Which devices are connected, and what are they doing?

  • What are my kids doing online, and how can I make sure they're not accessing harmful content?

Based on this, we realized the app needed a clear structure, allowing users to easily check security threats, connected devices, and parental control options all in one place.

Solution:

  • We designed a tabbed layout for the app, with each tab focused on a specific network feature: threats, devices, parental controls, and a dashboard summarizing recent activity. We used a card-based design for the dashboard, making it easy to add new features over time.

  • Parental controls were one of the most-requested features, as families wanted to monitor their children’s online activities and block harmful content. To make this flexible for families with kids of different ages, we created profiles where parents could set unique access levels and schedules for each child. For example, they could block internet access at bedtime with just a tap.

Outcome:

and protect their children online. With the intuitive card-based schedule feature, parents could quickly adjust settings to fit their kids’ routines. Feedback showed that families felt safer and more in control of their internet space, thanks to the enhanced parental controls and simplified dashboard.
